The Team

Beyond is led by those who have had direct experience of the UK mental health system in some form. Combined with rich expertise, this drives our empathy and passion to transform the societal approach towards mental health support for young people.

Our Shapers

Louisa Rose

Louisa Rose is CEO of Beyond and the founder of Now and Beyond – a free, national mental health festival for the educational community. Louisa is passionate about creating platforms that empower young people to use their lived experiences to shape change. Previously, Louisa worked as a social media consultant for ten years and is particularly interested in the intersection between tech and the mental health of young people. With lived experience of depression, anxiety, Tourette’s and OCD, Louisa publicly reflects on her personal mental health journey. Louisa is married and a mother of two young boys.

“Funding and access barriers limit the possibilities for the education community to engage with the wealth of third sector and independent mental health and wellbeing support available in the UK . We’ve got a fire in our belly at Beyond and we will continue to fight until access to mental health support for young people in need improves.”

Julia Clarfield

Julia Clarfield is Chief Operating Officer at Beyond. She joined the charity in the run-up to the first Now and Beyond in 2021, via her involvement with Inside Out Day. It became clear very quickly that the energy and commitment of the extended Beyond team would enable Beyond to achieve everything it intended. Julia’s career began in technology marketing and moved more specifically into charity event fundraising over the last 10 years. We were delighted when Julia accepted an appointment as a Trustee in 2024.

“The repercussions of poor mental health are huge. The stories I hear when I speak to schools about the impact of the pandemic on their pupils’ mental health are terrifying. Every child should have access to the help and support they need to ensure more lives aren’t ruined. Beyond has in its sights all it can do to help.”

Monica Leung

Monica Leung is the Head of Operations at Beyond. She was diagnosed with OCD and anxiety at the age of 12 and having struggled privately for many years, being a Youth Board member at Beyond previously gave her the strength to find her voice for the first time. By sharing her own personal experiences and mental health journey, Monica hopes she can inspire others to speak up, too. Monica is particularly interested in challenging the stigma of mental health within minority communities.
“Every child deserves to get the help they need, whoever they are and whatever the challenges they face. As a BBC (British Born Chinese), the stigma attached to mental health within my community and beyond weighed heavily on me as a child and I felt so alone with my struggles. No child should have to carry that burden alone.”

Louise Lyons

Louise is our grant writer. She is a 21 year black woman who is passionate about mental health advocation and equality, diversity and inclusion. Her core value is compassion for those who are suffering in society whether it is obvious or not. She loves learning and discussing the most important topics that affect society. Louise is particularly passionate about student Mental Health having co-founded the initiative BreatheUni with her brother Jeremy, which brings together students in a peer support setting.

Emma Joyce

Emma Joyce is our Events and Community Fundraiser and joined Beyond in January 2024. She started her career in the events world, but with so many young people suffering with their mental health around her, she wanted to make a difference.

As someone who is neurodiverse herself, Emma particularly has an interest in neurodiverse young people and their mental health and how music can help mental health.

“It’s so vital that young people are able to access the right support at the time they need it most and  at the moment, this isn’t possible for so many.  It takes so much courage for young people to be in a position to ask for help, whatever their situation. It’s awful that they get to this point to then be put on a waiting list or even worse be turned away. We are working hard to change that”

Jeremy Lyons

My journey so far has been defined by a series of unusual transitions between very different circumstances. I went to 7 different schools, including a couple of years in Ghana. During the pandemic, I left a Marketing-tech company to complete an MSc in psychology after already having a master’s in engineering. I now take pride in representing a growing minority of black men with a professional background in wellbeing and aspire to becoming licensed therapist.

Angharad is passionate about education for all. She wants to ensure that teachers have a grounded understanding of theory to ensure that they can represent the voices in their classroom. These theories include queer theory, CRT, feminism, capability and cultural capital. Angharad achieves this by managing her ‘Schools Against Sexism’ Research Action Group, running a feminist society, leading teacher CPD on challenging sexism, working with external organisations on female empowerment programmes and running child on-child abuse workshops for 15-16 year-olds. She has also developed schemes of work on Stephen Lawrence and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I’m really excited to be working with the team at Beyond. I have a strong personal and professional interest in mental health and supporting young people to access the help they need.
